Innovative platform from Zumobi provides real-time updates for users interested in the Consumer Electronics Show
Las Vegas, Nevada– January 10, 2012 – Zumobi, a leading mobile media company, announced a new innovative solution for premium brands to engage mobile smartphone users following the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Through a partnership with Popular Science magazine, Zumobi launched the first ever in-app CES news tracker. The rich media experience is the first of its kind and offers brands a revolutionary way to authentically connect with consumers and tech enthusiasts during CES. This special content is served dynamically through Zumobi’s ad platform and is highly scalable across apps. With just a few swipes of a finger, PopSci app users can read real-time CES news coverage, ensuring that they are up to date regardless of whether they are on the show floor in Vegas or reading from their couch in Vermont.
“We’re leveraging our strong publishing relationship with Popular Science to offer brands this compelling new component of our rich media ad platform, providing them the ability to take advantage of the currency of a CES Special Section in real time”, said Ken Willner, chief executive officer of Zumobi. “By bringing a more holistic view of in-app advertising to brand advertisers, our goal is to enable mobile experiences that are so powerful, they blur the lines between content and advertising.”
In this special sponsored section of the Popular Science application, consumers seamlessly connect via their phone to all the latest breaking news, products and innovations emanating from CES without having to sort through irrelevant content or download an additional app that would only be used for the duration of the show. To create a truly fluid and cohesive experience for the consumer, Zumobi worked with Doremus, a leading advertising agency, to ensure the sponsoring brand integration and content was seamlessly integrated into the existing feel of the Popular Science app. For brands, tapping into the Zumobi platform enables them to nimbly and effectively target the large number of consumers who follow CES news, in addition to the expected 140 thousand attendees.
“PopSci has partnered with Zumobi over the years to publish apps for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices, and we’re excited to team up once again for this effort,” said Gregg Hano, SVP of Bonnier’s Technology Group, which includes Popular Science. “This special CES section of the app enables us to make the most of mobile technology to deliver valued news content to our readers in real-time, and offers advertisers a fantastic opportunity to reach a highly engaged audience on mobile.”
The exclusive CES content section is free to consumers and is available starting today on all Popular Science apps on The Zumobi Network, including the iPhone and Android devices. Popular Science plans to run the special section through 1/31. To download the app, please visit the iOS AppStore or the Android Market.

New Hires and Office Opening Marks Period of Growth for Mobile Media Publisher
Seattle, WA – July 28, 2011 – Zumobi, a mobile media publisher, recently named Jonas Abney as its new Director of Publishing Partnerships and Patricia Clark as its new VP of Sales and Sponsorships. Jonas and Patricia join the rapidly growing Zumobi team in the recently opened New York office, which also includes a previous hire, Bryan Henry, Sales Account Executive, who joined in March, 2011.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Jonas and Patricia to Zumobi’s executive team,” said Ken Willner, CEO of Zumobi. “Expanding our capabilities on the East Coast has been a top priority and enables us to better support our media and advertising partners there. Zumobi’s leadership and market momentum in the mobile publishing space is accelerating, and attracting strong, experienced leaders like Patricia and Jonas is a testament to that.”
Jonas Abney is a digital media and publishing veteran. As an original member of the Google AdSense sales team, he played a critical role in the development of the larger AdSense network. He joins Zumobi most recently from Hachette-Filipacchi Media’s Digital Group, where he ran the business development group and oversaw strategic partnerships, e-commerce initiatives and content licensing for all of Hachette’s properties, including Elle and Car and Driver. Prior to his work at Hachette-Filipacchi Media, Jonas oversaw strategic partnerships and licensing for Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter as the Director of Business Development and Digital Strategy at Nielsen Business Media.
“Zumobi is an incredibly unique player in the mobile space, working with top-tier media companies to bring their content to mobile in an effective, engaging way. We don’t just help publishers launch apps, we help them to launch app businesses across multiple platforms and reinforce their monetization efforts,” said Jonas Abney, new Director of Publishing Partnerships. “With my experience working directly with publishers on their digital strategy, I’m looking forward to helping them reach new audiences by building their presence on mobile and other emerging platforms.”
Patricia Clark, Zumobi’s new VP of Sales and Sponsorships, has great experience in leading sales efforts for digital, traditional and emerging media teams. Prior to joining Zumobi, Patricia was the VP of Sales at 4INFO, a mobile media company that specializes in mobile advertising for businesses and free SMS alerts for consumers. Patricia has also worked at major media companies in both traditional and digital interactive roles including Hearst Magazines and Fox Interactive Media.
“Advertisers are embracing the opportunities that mobile offers,” said Patricia Clark, new VP of Sales and Sponsorships. “ Zumobi has built a solid reputation by partnering with leading advertisers and agencies to help them drive deep audience engagement and business results across multiple screens and devices. So you want to take control of your life financially? Investment community The Motley Fool's mobile app has a very reliable and easy-to-operate interface that can be used by just about anyone.
Maybe you've already heard of The Motley Fool. These guys not only are known for owning the fool.com domain name, but they're a service that helps people to manage their finances, whether it's setting a budget, investing wisely or saving for retirement.
The Motley Fool's mobile app is pretty focused on giving users quick, on-the-go access to the latest financial news and analysis and even a few articles that give helpful advice — like “what you need to retire rich.”
The Motley Fool doesn't have an exceptionally lively looking website, and the same can be said for its app. It lacks any kind of exciting, colorful pizzazz, sticking with light blues, whites, WordPress style tabs and arial fonts. It's hard to complain too much about the simplicity of the template, though, when the app is so easy to navigate and clearly achieves what it sets out to do.
It's also important to note that the app has been created by The Zumobi Network, the same people who brought the high-quality, vibrant and fun-to-use MSNBC.com app to the Android marketplace. It's pretty clear from the first time you launch The Motley Fool that you're looking at a well-produced application.
Because categories are organized along a scrolling horizontal menu across the top of the app, users know exactly where to go to find what they're looking for, whether it's Top Stories, the websites' own podcasts or stories you've recently saved. Not only can you save your favorites, but you can also “email to me” and share articles with your friends with 401(k)s through Facebook, Twitter or email.
Search is also easy. Users can use the Ticker Search, located below the menu, to look for individual company stock data, graphs and relevant articles.
In short, if you keep close tabs on what's happening on Wall Street or watch shows like Mad Money, this will be a welcomed addition to your Android library.

The Motley Fool financial news and analysis brand proved long ago it was no one’s court jester. Along with TheStreet it is among the longest lived finance brands built primarily on digital. And so its entry onto the smartphone app platform is eminently sensible, modest, but fully functional. The Motley Fool app is available now in the iOS and Android stores. Free and ad-supported the publisher has partnered with Zumobi, which runs a network of branded news apps that include Motor Trend, MSNBC and the Today show.
The app is designed for quick look-ups and at-a-glance consulting on the latest news. A laterally scrolling menu accesses headlines for top stories, news that can be parsed by industry sectors, most recent posts, and then an archive of audio podcasts. Articles can be saved into their own silo of personalized content. There are also sharing tools to send material to Facebook, Twitter and email.
There is nothing spectacular about the Motley Fool app, except that it is an efficient way for financial mavens to get their fix quickly. The search box accepts company names and ticker symbols to return both current market price and articles relevant to the company.
Zumobi has succeeded in matching the brand look and feel from the MotelyFool.com front page, and much of the current content is replicated here. We gather that the template cannot handle easily the current overall market charts that are on the site's front page, however. While charts of individual stocks are a few clicks into a company search, it is a bit odd that an app so focused on the markets and stocks is not reporting at a glance the current market stats.
A good idea that is awkwardly executed is the archive of podcasts on the app. The most recent editions of the Market Foolery and Motley Fool Money audio shows are available in their own silos. Generally, audio and podcast assets are woefully underused by apps in this platform that is, after all, about voice, so it is great to see that dimension of the MF content used here. But in this case activating the podcast kicks you out of the app itself and into the standalone iOS audio player. Zumobi tells us this is a limitation of the iOS, which does not make embedded audio backward compatible with older versions of the OS. Whatever the excuse, the user experience is bad enough to consider excluding the feature until it can work seamlessly.
Generally, Motley Fool leverages the familiar Zumobi platform to offer another good-enough app for brand loyalists. We don’t think there is much here to make the brand stand-out among clearly better rival apps like TheStreet’s recent iOS release, which succeeds in including market status and embedded videos that don’t kick us out.

Zumobi keeps expanding its network of high quality mobile applications. Their latest addition is the Motley Fool app for Android and iOS, which is said to bring “valuable financial tips and tools to investors on the go.”
Obviously the app rocks constantly updated content from The Motley Fool’s digital properties, including categories on top stories, sector coverage, archives from The Motley Fool Money and MarketFoolery Podcasts. Moreover, there’s the Ticker Search option using which investors can search individual company stock data and information. As with all Zumobi apps, sharing capabilities come included, allowing users to inform their friends on the cool stuff they’ve read via Twitter, Facebook and email.
The Motley Fool app is available as a free download from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market. Links for both the iOS and Android versions are below.

John SanGiovanni, Co-Founder and VP of product design for Zumobi Inc., a mobile media publisher and a Zumobi partner, Mike Haney, U.S .Director, Moving Media+ and digital development director at Popular Science magazine, will participate on the panel “Digiday Mobile - The iPad (and other Tablets) Goldrush” at the DPA Conference (DPAC) in New York City.
DPAC brings together the leading figures in media, marketing, publishing, and technology to discuss the exploding digital content and advertising industry - exploring the new frontiers of "digital" for all content providers, agencies, and marketers.
The panel “Digiday Mobile - The iPad (and other Tablets) Goldrush” will address questions and concerns around publishers’ shift to magazine distribution on the iPad and other tablets. Early results are mixed and many magazine iPad editions suffer from low download numbers, high subscription prices and questionable strategies.
Drawing from his experience at Zumobi working with media companies to publish applications on The Zumobi Network across all mobile devices, John will share insight and best practices for publishers looking to bring their magazine content to tablets. Mike will share from his experiences launching successful mobile strategies at Bonnier Corp. and will also discuss alternative mobile offerings and monetization models that are successful based on Popular Science magazine’s partnership with Zumobi.
Popular Science magazine and Zumobi recently re-designed and re-launched the PopSci.com application for the Android and iOS mobile platforms. Zumobi’s app network model offers compelling sponsorship options through the guaranteed pairing of PopSci.com's trusted third party content with Zumobi's BrandBlast "app-within-an-app" rich media advertising technology. This creates the ideal environment for premium advertisers who are seeking exclusivity, metrics transparency and brand safety.
